Creating specifications for a platform for providing product information online
Project duration: 4 months
Brief description
Creating requirements specifications as the basis for developing a new application for providing construction product information online. The new development is set to replace the existing application that is based on ASP.Net and SQL Server. The future application is to be expanded to include functions for entering products on a web interface and for exporting data in XML format. As the invitation to tender includes development, hosting and support, the requirements specifications do not include any technological aspects.
Supplement
Documentation on the existing application as well as the application itself made available by the customer provide the basis for information on which to write the specifications. The specifications are created in two phases in joint workshops with the customer. In the course of an as-is analysis, all the existing technical functions are first identified and described in detail. New requirements are then added to these existing processes. The results of the as-is analysis and target design together form the requirements catalog for the new application to be developed.
Subject description
According to the Construction Products Ordinance, manufacturers are obliged to provide construction product information for all countries in which the product is to be marketed, up to 10 years after the last sale, even if the company no longer exists. This information can either be provided in paper form (which is not feasible in practice) or on the Internet. If provided online, it must be ensured that the data cannot be subsequently altered and that the URL on which the information is provided does not alter within the publication period. In the existing application, the construction product information from the manufacturer is either uploaded as a finished PDF or in the form of an interface file in Excel format and the PDF is then generated on the server. After the upload or generation on the server, the documents have to be approved by an authorized user before the documents are publicly accessible.
