Sample workflow manager extensions for rack-based sample distribution

Project duration: 1 year, 10 months

Brief description

The project aims at the development and further development of a data processing system for the automation of processes in routine clinical-diagnostic laboratories. The implementation of a functionality for the automated distribution of samples stored in racks via a transport system enables the laboratory to achieve more efficient working processes and to increase the degree of automation.

Supplement

Important tasks of the system are the support of complex workflows in the laboratory. These include the administration and distribution of various types of patient samples (e.g. blood and urine), the archiving of patient samples, the implementation of a standard interface to the laboratory information system and the quality control of patient samples. In the context of sample distribution, automation plays a decisive role in optimising laboratory processes and thus in the faster determination of patient examination results. This enables faster and more informed treatment of patients.

Subject description

Analytical, pre-analytical, and post-analytical instruments communicate events via messages (ASTM or HL7). To support fully automatic laboratories, these messages have to be evaluated and answered in accordance with a laboratory configuration, so that samples can be distributed in a more targeted manner. Of crucial importance here is the complexity of the work processes being mapped (aliquoting, load balancing, fast processing, etc.). Depending on the nature of a preanalytic Instrument sample containers are distributed individually or together with other sample containers on a rack. In the latter case an optimal Distribution that considers all sample containers and resolves potential conflicts between those sample containers has to be determined.
