Feasibility Study Labor-Simulation

Project duration: 16 days

Brief description

The feasibility of a project shall be analyzed. Aim of the project is the realistic estimation of the maximal load, which acts on the laboratory IT during the control of different laboratory instruments. An approach for the simplified simulation of a laboratory which uses the real IT system was elaborated. For this approach requirement engineering was conducted and possible tools were identified. Finally, a preliminary cost evaluation was conducted.

Supplement

During the feasibility study four approaches were designed and analyzed after different criteria. The approaches ranged from a systematic-mathematic model to a full scale simulation of a laboratory workflow. Criteria for the analysis among others were the reachable prediction reliability, implementation effort and an easy and timesaving creation of new laboratory scenarios for the user.  The optimal approach for these criteria was analyzed in depth. It consists of a simplified simulation of a laboratory, which uses the real laboratory IT. For this approach Requirements Engineering was conducted and possible tools identified. Some tools were tested for applicability. A preliminary design concept consisting of a class and module overview was created. Finally, a preliminary cost evaluation was conducted.

Subject description

Aim of the project is software, which can test the laboratory information system, before the real laboratory is built. This software provides an inexpensive testing environment which can detect possible problems early in the development phase and potentially increases customer satisfaction.  The simulation software is using the laboratory information system to be implemented and is virtually mimicking the behavior of analytical instruments. Virtual instruments within the simulation must therefore closely mimic real world functionalities i.e. information exchange with the laboratory information system and handling of virtual samples. Further, the software is logging a variety of performance values (system performance, message response times) which are provided for subsequent analysis. Finally, a new laboratory scenario can be easily configured using XML and the Oracle Data Access Interface.
