Data preparation for MDM system

Project duration: 4 months

Brief description

There is an existing system for managing hardware-related data (PCs, printers, monitors, locations, people, etc.), which are stored centrally in a SQL Server database and can be edited by the user via an MS Access client. In addition to this centrally managed data, various MS Excel files with hardware-related data (mobile phones, tablets, locations, rental periods, people, etc.) are maintained by the department. The task of the project is to compare the data in the Excel files with the central SQL Server data and, if possible, to carry out an automated data import. Due to different data qualities, prior data validation is required.

Supplement

In the first step, an MS Access database is created, which is used as an import buffer, problem visualization and for data transformation. The Excel data and the relevant SQL Server inventory data are read into this application and can be sorted, filtered or queried according to criteria using the MS Access basic options. This problem visualization process can be used to identify data deviations with system support that cannot be recognized automatically (e.g. an object that is technically the same but with different spellings, spaces, etc.). In addition to the user's manual options, automated assignments of key values such as the personnel number are carried out – if the data structures allow it.

Subject description

The manually or automatically validated data is transferred from the MS Access database to the SQL Server database via code or generated as new data sets in the central system. Since the data continued to be changed during the project, this process is repeated periodically. Through queries stored in MS Access, validation constructs once created in the system can be reused.
